Dr. Michael C. Riddell is a Professor in the School of Kinesiology and Health Science, Muscle Health Research Centre, at York University in Toronto Canada. He is also a Senior Scientist at LMC Endocrinology & Diabetes and Centricity Research. Michael obtained his PhD in Physiology/Pharmacology at McMaster University on energy metabolism in diabetes during exercise and did his post-doctoral work in the Department of Physiology at the University of Toronto under the supervision of Dr. Mladen Vranic.
Dr. Riddell and his research team at York U uses a broad selection of human and animal models of diabetes and techniques to help discover how regular exercise, stress and diabetes itself influences metabolism and health. Dr. Riddell has authored over 250 scientific articles related to exercise, stress and metabolism and he is also a frequent speaker on the role of technology for helping make exercise safer and more effective for people living with diabetes. In partnership with Zucara Therapeutics, Dr. Riddell’s lab is also helping to test a new potential drug, ZT-01, for the prevention of hypoglycemia by boosting glucagon secretion in diabetes. He is also the co-chair of the Type 1 Diabetes & Exercise Initiative (T1Dexi), the largest observational exercise study to date of type 1 diabetes, physical activity and glycemia, funded by The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust. Dr. Riddell has been living with the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes since the age of 14 years and is a key international advocate for technology and therapy access for all people living with the same diagnosis.
